 Gettin' Busy... Locate the Culprit

Make sure you have some disposable rags handy... if the culprit is the flapper then it's best to keep it from touching anything else. Remove the tank lid and place it upside down on the floor someplace where it won't get stepped on or tripped over. With the fixture stop still in the open position sit on the toilet seat, facing the tank. Listen closely... if you can hear the trickling of water then it's a good possibility that you have a faulty flapper.

The flapper is what controls the flow of water
from the tank to the bowl... usually black or red in color and located in the center of the tank. Don't touch the flapper without your vinyl gloves! Whatever color it is will stain onto whatever it touches.

It's connected to the flush handle with a small chain that lifts the flapper when the handle is depressed. It also pivots at the base of the fill tube on two ears. Now that we've located the flapper we can turn the water off to the toilet.
 Flapper removal and replacement

Turn to fixture stop handle clockwise then flush the toilet to ensure that the water is off. Keep the handle depressed until the water level in the tank goes down as far as possible. Next put on a pair of your vinyl
gloves, disconnect the chain from the flush handle and unhook the flapper from the ears at the base of the fill tube.

Before removing it from the tank grab a disposable rag and wrap the flapper and your gloves into it. Take the whole mess to your local hardware or "do-it" store to make sure you buy a new one that matches. They're fairly universal so it won't be rocket science and the cost shouldn't require a credit card.
